A natural swimming pond keeps water clean with plants and microorganisms instead of chlorine. We explain how biological filtration works and how to plan one.
A natural swimming pond is a swimming system that keeps its water clean through plants and beneficial microorganisms rather than chemical disinfectants.
Its appearance is similar to a natural body of water, but behind it lies planned engineering and a balanced ecosystem.
The system combines a clear water swimming area and a vegetated area that naturally purifies the water. The aim is to create a swimmable, balanced and bright aquatic environment without chlorine and similar chemicals.
The heart of biological filtration are colonies of beneficial bacteria living on the surface of plant roots and gravel beds.
These microorganisms break down excess nutrients and organic pollution in the water and consume substances that feed algae growth.
Water is continuously circulated between the swimming zone and the plant zone. During this cycle, mechanical and biological purification occur together. After all, what keeps the water clear is not chemicals, but a natural purification chain kept in balance.
The main difference is the disinfection method: while the classical pool is treated with chlorine or similar chemicals, the natural pond does this job with the plant-microorganism balance.
For this reason, there is no chlorine smell and no drying effect on the skin in natural pools.
The second difference is the use of space. Additional surface allocation is required for the vegetated treatment zone of the natural pond. While the classic pool may be more compact, the natural pond becomes an organic landscaping element that integrates with the garden.
Balance of the ecosystem.
It is based on the harmony of aquatic plants, microorganisms, temperature and nutrient balance. Choosing the right plant and calculating the regional proportions well in the project ensures that the system can regulate itself.
When balance is established, the pond behaves like a living system that adapts to the seasons. Establishing this balance should be planned with an experienced team, as it requires botanical and water engineering to be considered together.
Maintenance of a natural pond is based on a different logic than the classical pond.
Instead of daily chemical dosing, observation of the ecosystem and seasonal regulations come to the fore. Plant care, cleaning of fallen leaves and monitoring the water level form the basis of the routine.
When the system is installed correctly, the maintenance burden is less than expected, because most of the mechanism that purifies the water works naturally. However, professional control during seasonal transitions is valuable to maintain balance.
The natural swimming pond is ideal for users who care about a chemical-free swimming experience and want an organic water feature that integrates with their garden.
Lands that can allocate space for plant areas and are compatible with the landscape are the most suitable ground for this system.
Together with our team, which has been installing a wide range of water structures ranging from pools to spas since 1993, we can evaluate the suitability of your land and your expectations for a natural pond. Proper planning is the key to the long-term success of this system.

+90 216 475 39 37In a balanced natural pond, water does not remain stagnant as it constantly circulates between the plant area and the swimming area. Moving water greatly deters mosquito breeding. Additionally, in a balanced ecosystem, natural creatures such as dragonflies and frogs also play a supervisory role. It is important to set up the circulation design correctly to prevent stagnant corners.

The natural pond acts like a living system that adapts to the seasons. In winter, plant activity slows down and water may become clear. In freezing regions, aquatic plants and ecosystems are generally planned to survive the winter. Collecting fallen leaves and observing the system during the winter transition helps to quickly establish balance in spring.

Establishing the plant-microorganism balance in a natural pond requires a maturation process. A classical pond, by contrast, reaches chemical balance immediately. It takes time for plants to take root and for beneficial bacterial colonies to establish. Temporary turbidity in the water is normal during this transition period. The exact duration varies depending on climate and plant selection.

In natural ponds, water-purifying marsh plants and surface and depth plants are generally used together. The selection is made according to climate, water depth and purification needs. Accurate calculation of plant species and zone proportions is critical for the system to self-regulate. This choice requires botany and aquatic engineering to be considered together.

In natural ponds, the transition and depth differences between the swimming zone and the plant zone should be clearly designed. Since vegetated areas can visually hide the ground, safe entry points and supervision are important, especially in environments where children are present. We recommend embedding security solutions into the pond design from the beginning.

Since there is no regular chlorine and disinfectant intake in natural ponds, chemical costs are lower than in a classical pool. However, plant care and seasonal arrangements require different effort. Since most of the water is purified naturally, its energy and chemical load is generally less. The total cost varies depending on the size of the pond and the extent of the landscaping.
