Pool finishes differ in looks, durability, maintenance and cost. We compare ceramic, glass mosaic and liner to help you pick the right surface.
The finish is the surface you see and the one the water touches; it sets both how the pool looks and how it feels to use every day.
A well-chosen finish keeps its colour and a hygienic surface for years.
This is not about the waterproofing layer but about the finish that goes on top of it. The choice comes down to the look you want, how heavily the pool is used, how much maintenance you are prepared to do, and budget.
Porcelain and ceramic tiles are the usual choice for heavily used pools because their surface is hard and wears slowly.
Porcelain tiles absorb very little water, so they stand up to frost and chemicals.
The range of colours and textures is broad: matt, gloss and natural-stone-look tiles are all available. Laying them needs a true, even substrate and skilled tilers, which puts the cost in the mid-to-upper bracket.
Glass mosaic catches the light and gives the water a sense of depth; visually it is the strongest option.
The small pieces follow curved walls, steps and unusual shapes without trouble.
Glass does not absorb water and resists pool chemicals, so the surface stays durable and hygienic. The trade-off is the amount of grouting: installation takes longer and costs more than ceramic.
A liner is a flexible PVC membrane laid over the inside of the pool shell.
It waterproofs and forms the finished surface at the same time, which makes it a fast and economical option.
Liners come in various patterns and thicknesses and suit projects where quick delivery and budget come first. They do not last as long as ceramic or mosaic and need replacing at intervals, though replacement is relatively straightforward.
Four things decide it together: the look you want, durability and service life, ease of maintenance and total cost.
In a hotel pool where appearance matters most, glass mosaic may win; in a budget-led project, a liner may.
How intensively the pool is used also matters; in commercial and heavily used pools, hard surfaces such as ceramic and mosaic often work out cheaper over the long run. Across our projects we have learned that the finish should follow how the pool will be used, not how a sample board looks.
Whatever finish you choose, water balance does most to decide how long it lasts.
Unbalanced pH and high chlorine dull even the toughest surface and wear away the grout.
Regular brushing, correct dosing and seasonal checks keep the colour. For finish materials and matching products, see our pool finishing systems product group.

+90 216 475 39 37Yes. Many projects use ceramic on the floor and walls and glass mosaic on the steps or along the waterline band, so each area gets a surface suited to its wear. Pay attention to grout lines and levels where materials meet.

Yes, the finish colour changes how the water looks: light tones give clear, turquoise water, dark tones a deeper, calmer look. Dark surfaces absorb a little more sunlight and can add slightly to water temperature. Choose the colour together with the garden and the house.

Scale and oily deposits at the waterline can leave permanent marks, especially on mosaic grout and porous surfaces, if they are not cleaned regularly. Correct water chemistry and routine waterline cleaning largely stop the band from forming. Wiping it off before it sets is far easier than trying to remove it later.

Grout colour directly affects the overall tone and sparkle of the mosaic; grout matched to the tiles makes the surface read as one piece. Grout made for pools, resistant to water and chemicals, also slows wear and fading at the joints. Grout choice is one of the most often overlooked details in mosaic work.

The finish goes on top of the waterproofing, so the waterproofing must be proven sound before finishing starts. Normally the finish is laid only after a water retention test shows no leaks. On a surface where waterproofing was skipped or done badly, even the best finish will not stop a leak.

In hotel, resort and residential-complex pools the surface faces constant cleaning and mechanical wear. Hard, low-absorption porcelain and glass mosaic are therefore cheaper in the long run. A liner may need replacing more often under that kind of use. The deciding factor is how many people swim in the pool every day.
