In Izmir, a pool is designed together with 2,938 hours of sunshine a year, 48 percent summer humidity, evaporation, Gediz alluvium and earthquake load.
Pool construction in Izmir is the delivery of a reinforced concrete pool project in a hot-summer Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa), under 2,938.5 hours of sunshine a year and relative humidity that falls to 48.7 percent in July, on the alluvial plain of the Gediz Delta and the rocky ground of the Çeşme-Urla peninsula.
It differs from a pool project in Samsun or Bursa in three ways: water is lost to evaporation, the ground is loose sediment in the city and rock on the peninsula, and the shell is detailed for the ground amplification revealed by the 2020 earthquake.
This article is not a cost or design guide. Its subject is how Izmir's climate and ground data determine the sizing of the pool shell, the balance tank, drainage and the seismic joint. Whether prefabricated panel pools suit Izmir is the subject of a separate comparison article.
Izmir's annual mean temperature is 18.4 °C, the warmest month average (July) is 28.6 °C and the coldest month average (January) is 9.0 °C.
The highest temperature measured is 43.2 °C (July) and the lowest -8.2 °C (January). The annual 730.5 mm of precipitation is spread over 87.2 days, and most of it is concentrated between November and February; only 3.0 mm falls in July. For a pool project, three concrete conclusions follow: unheated outdoor pool water rises above 28 °C in July and August, there is no topping up from rain throughout the summer, and evaporation is at its highest in the longest and sunniest months of the year.
| Month | Avg. temperature (°C) | Avg. high (°C) | Precipitation (mm) | Relative humidity (%) | Sunshine (hours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 9.0 | 12.7 | 127.5 | 68.9 | 140.4 |
| February | 9.9 | 14.0 | 107.2 | 67.3 | 145.5 |
| March | 12.4 | 17.2 | 77.8 | 63.5 | 202.6 |
| April | 16.2 | 21.3 | 50.1 | 60.3 | 234.3 |
| May | 21.1 | 26.5 | 32.9 | 57.6 | 299.1 |
| June | 26.0 | 31.3 | 14.4 | 51.6 | 345.2 |
| July | 28.6 | 33.8 | 3.0 | 48.7 | 381.6 |
| August | 28.5 | 33.6 | 6.7 | 50.7 | 361.0 |
| September | 24.2 | 29.5 | 23.5 | 56.0 | 291.1 |
| October | 19.5 | 24.6 | 56.5 | 63.1 | 235.9 |
| November | 14.4 | 18.8 | 99.6 | 67.4 | 172.6 |
| December | 10.5 | 14.0 | 131.3 | 70.1 | 129.3 |
| Year | 18.4 | - | 730.5 | 60.4 | 2,938.5 |
From a pool engineering point of view, the decisive row of the table is July: 381.6 hours of sunshine, 48.7 percent humidity and 3.0 mm of rain come together in the same month. This combination quickly uses up both the water and the free chlorine. December, with 131.3 mm, is the wettest month; the overflow channel and perimeter drainage are sized for this month, when the pool is at winterising level.
The rate of evaporation depends on the temperature and humidity difference between water and air, on solar radiation and on wind.
In Izmir, the imbat, the breeze that blows from the gulf onto land on summer afternoons, constantly sweeps away the saturated layer of air above the pool surface; replaced by air at 48 percent humidity, this layer keeps evaporation going. The result is that a pool of the same size needs much more fresh water than on the Black Sea coast. The pool design supplies this water in one of two ways: in an overflow system, automatic filling linked to the level sensor in the balance tank; in a skimmer system, a float-operated top-up line.
Evaporated water means more than a loss of volume. The water goes, but dissolved solids (TDS), calcium hardness and cyanuric acid stay in the pool and their concentrations rise. Each top-up adds the calcium and bicarbonate that come with mains water. That is why in Izmir the pool maintenance programme doubles the frequency of TDS and cyanuric acid monitoring in the test log during the summer months; cyanuric acid extends the half-life of free chlorine by 4 to 6 times, and without this stabiliser sunlight quickly uses up the chlorine.
Izmir's city centre stretches along the shore of the gulf, opening onto the Gediz River Delta to the north, an alluvial plain formed by small streams to the east, and more rugged terrain to the south.
Most of Bayraklı, Karşıyaka, Bornova and Çiğli sit on this loose sediment; the altitude in the city centre is 2 m. In the villa areas of Çeşme, Urla, Alaçatı and Seferihisar, the ground is mostly rock and dense gravel, but plots near the shore have saline groundwater in contact with seawater.
| Case | Ground | Water table (relative to pool floor) | Specification clause |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: Gulf shore and Gediz plain (Bayraklı, Karşıyaka, Çiğli, Bornova flatland) | Loose alluvium, sand and silt | Close to floor level, tied to sea level | Ground investigation and bearing capacity calculation, ground improvement or a thicker raft if needed; hydrostatic relief valve; perimeter drainage; C30/37 concrete with waterproofing admixture; seismic joint between pool and building |
| B: Slopes and inland areas (Narlıdere, Güzelbahçe ridges, Buca) | Clayey sand, weathered rock | Below floor level, rises with rain | Hydrostatic valve, perimeter drainage, gravel fill against clay swelling, separate structural calculation on plots needing retaining |
| C: Peninsula (Çeşme, Alaçatı, Urla, Seferihisar) | Rock, dense gravel; saline groundwater on the shore | Usually below floor level; on shore plots saline and variable with the tide | Rock excavation allowance, raft anchored to rock; on the shore AISI 316L and the option of epoxy-coated reinforcement against saline water; standard drainage |
On rock, the cost of excavation rises but the shell calculation becomes simpler. On alluvium, the pool shell is reinforced to work as a continuous raft against differential settlement of the ground beneath it; the points where the skimmer line and main drain pipes leave the shell are detailed with flexible penetrations. The same reinforced concrete pool drawing cannot be used on these two kinds of ground.
The Aegean Sea earthquake of 30 October 2020 (Mw 7.0, focal depth 16.1 km, epicentre about 14 km northeast of the island of Samos) killed 117 people and injured 1,034 in Izmir province; in Bayraklı and Bornova, 103 buildings collapsed or had to be demolished, and at least 700 buildings were heavily damaged.
Ground motion in Bayraklı and Karşıyaka was amplified by ground conditions made up of loose sediments; in the Izmir basin, ground motion was amplified 2.5 to 3 times. The same earthquake produced a tsunami with a wave height reaching 6 m at Akarca in Seferihisar and a run-up of 5.0 to 5.6 m at Sığacık.
For the pool shell, this translates into two design decisions. First, in an earthquake a water-filled pool sways with both its own mass and the load of sloshing water; if the shell is rigidly connected to the building, the two structures sway at different periods and crack at the connection. That is why a seismic joint with elastic filler is left between the pool and the building, terrace or retaining wall, and the surround paving sits so that it can move independently of the shell. Second, on alluvium ground amplification enters the calculation: in loose sand and silt, the pool shell is designed with a continuous raft and increased reinforcement against possible liquefaction or differential settlement of the ground beneath it.
Seismic details for a reinforced concrete pool in Izmir
- A seismic joint between the pool shell and the building foundation, at least as wide as set by the structural calculation, with elastic filler and a waterstop.
- Overflow channel and balance tank on the same raft as the shell or connected with flexible pipe penetrations; rigid PVC connections are points of failure.
- Flexible sleeves and expansion joints where skimmer, main drain and inlet pipes leave the shell; pipes are not buried in rigid fill.
- On alluvial ground, the ground investigation includes a liquefaction assessment; the result sets raft thickness and reinforcement ratio.
- On shore plots, the balance tank and plant room at a level that will not flood in a flood or tsunami scenario, or in a watertight compartment.
Glossary
- Imbat
- The local wind that blows from the sea onto land on summer afternoons; it keeps evaporation going by sweeping away the humid air layer above the pool surface.
- Balance tank
- The tank that collects overflowing water in an overflow pool and manages the fresh water supply through a level sensor; evaporation losses are topped up here.
- Ground amplification
- Loose sediment layers transmitting earthquake waves more strongly than firm ground; measured at 2.5 to 3 times in the Izmir basin in the 2020 earthquake.
- Liquefaction
- Water-saturated loose sand temporarily losing its bearing capacity during earthquake shaking; a subject of investigation for the ground beneath a pool shell.
- Seismic joint
- The gap left between the pool shell and an adjoining structure, closed with elastic filler and a waterstop; it allows the two structures to sway independently.
- Cyanuric acid
- A stabiliser that protects free chlorine from sunlight; its concentration rises through evaporation and is lowered only by partial water replacement.
Winterising is mild in Izmir.
The January average is 9.0 °C, and although the record low is -8.2 °C, prolonged freezing is rare. The pool is not drained, the level is taken below the overflow channel, and the pump and filter lines are protected. Paving falls and gutters are checked for December and January rainfall (127.5 mm and 131.3 mm) so that the surround paving does not carry surface water into the pool.
In the six months from May to October, the monthly average temperature is in the 19.5 °C to 28.6 °C band; an unheated outdoor pool is used from early June to late September.
An air source heat pump extends the season from mid-April to early November; because Izmir's winter averages stay above 9 °C, the heat pump can run at low load all year. In Izmir, an indoor pool comes up mostly in hotel and residential complex projects with a year-round occupancy target.
In the summer months there is the opposite problem: water above 28 °C does not cool swimmers and is unfavourable for the chemistry. In the Langelier calculation, the temperature factor moves towards scaling as the water warms; in heated hotel pools the heater is switched off in July, and water temperature is lowered with shading and night circulation. In some pool projects a reversible heat pump is chosen and run in cooling mode in summer. This decision enters the plant room and electrical capacity calculation at the pool construction stage; it is difficult to add later.

+90 216 475 39 37April to June and September to October suit excavation and shell concrete. In July and August, with average highs above 33 °C, concrete curing becomes difficult and the risk of surface cracking rises; if pours are made in these months, night pouring and wet curing are planned. Rain from November to February slows excavation.

In July, 381.6 hours of sunshine, 48.7 percent relative humidity and the afternoon imbat act at the same time. Evaporation is at its highest level of the year and there is no topping up from rain. In a pool without automatic level control, weekly topping up is normal; if the loss is well above this, a leak test is carried out.

The pool shell is a separate reinforced concrete box that sways under the load of sloshing water. If it is built in the same formwork as the building without a joint, cracks and water loss appear along the connection line. A seismic joint with elastic filler is left between building and pool; on alluvial ground the ground investigation includes a liquefaction assessment.

On the peninsula, rock appears just below the surface; excavation is done with a breaker and takes longer. On shore plots, saline groundwater and sea air call for AISI 316L in stainless parts and extra protection for reinforcement. On the other hand, the shell calculation is simpler on rock and the risk of hydrostatic uplift is low.

Monthly average temperatures are above 24 °C from June to September; unheated use is about four months. With a heat pump and a solar cover, the season extends from mid-April to early November. In July and August the problem is not heating but cooling water that exceeds 28 °C.
