Can you build a pool on a terrace or rooftop? We explain load calculation, structural reinforcement, waterproofing and seismic load as critical engineering topics.
Yes, but it takes far more engineering than a pool in the ground.
A rooftop or terrace pool puts a permanent load on the building's structural frame, and no work starts until calculations show the structure can carry it safely.
The building's structure answers the question: columns, beams and slab are assessed first, and only then is the pool drawn. If the load budget is tight, prefabricated pool shells are worth a look; they weigh little, and on some terraces they are the only option that works.
One cubic metre of water weighs about one tonne.
Add the pool shell, the finishes and the people in the water, and the load on the terrace slab becomes substantial. How that load travels down into the columns and beams is calculated on day one.
Slabs in existing buildings are rarely designed for this kind of load. Either the structure is strengthened (carbon-fibre wrapping or a steel sub-frame, for example) or the pool is placed where it bears directly on columns, beams or shear walls. A structural engineer's assessment decides which.
In an earthquake country like Türkiye, a mass of water high up in a building is a serious responsibility.
During a quake the water sloshes and pushes sideways on the structure, and that force has to be part of the structural calculation.
Mass at roof level changes how the whole building behaves in an earthquake. A rooftop pool is therefore checked for dynamic behaviour as well as static weight, and there are no shortcuts in that calculation.
A waterproofing defect in a ground-level pool leaks into the soil.
The same defect on a terrace shows up as a stain on the ceiling of the flat below. Waterproofing is the layer where a terrace pool has the least room for error.
The membrane must be continuous and flexible, with every drain, wall junction, light niche and pipe penetration detailed individually. A leak detection and drainage layer underneath it flags a leak before water reaches the floor below.
In a raised pool, where the pump, filter and balance tank sit affects both the hydraulics and the load distribution.
A plant room you can walk into and work in makes years of maintenance easier.
People live below and beside the pool, so the equipment has to run quietly and must not pass vibration into the structure. Variable-speed pumps on anti-vibration mounts, sized to fit a small plant room and sparing on energy, are the practical choice here.
A rooftop pool is a joint job for the architect, the structural engineer and the pool engineer.
When one discipline runs the project alone, a critical detail from another gets missed.
We handle structural assessment, waterproofing and hydraulic design at the same table. Our site experience in 14 countries lets us build safely in difficult conditions. After handover the rule stays the same: every maintenance job protects the waterproofing layer underneath.

+90 216 475 39 37Keeping total weight down matters at height, so some projects use lighter panel or composite systems. Reinforced concrete is heavier but can work with the right strengthening. The building's load capacity decides which one is used.

Yes. Less water means less load on the slab, which is why shallow relaxation pools and compact sizes are common on roofs. A small pool still needs calculating, though; load distribution and seismic effects are checked at every size.

A leak detection and drainage layer under the waterproofing shows a leak before it reaches the flat below. Multi-layer waterproofing and water-retention tests cut the risk from the start. The protection comes from layers that back each other up, not from a single one.

Routine care (water balance, cleaning) is the same. The difference appears when a waterproofing or structural repair is needed, because height makes access and work harder. That is why the plant room and service routes are planned from the start.

An exposed, windy position raises the risk of pipes freezing. For winter, the water level is lowered and the pipes are drained, because frozen water damages both the plumbing and the structure. Where needed, the lines are fitted with trace heating.
Çilek Havuz Corporate
Yes. A terrace pool is cheapest and safest when its load is allowed for while the building's structure is being designed. Adding it later usually means costly strengthening. Tell your architect and structural engineer about the pool at the first meeting.
