Winter pool chemicals: purpose, limits and product selection

Winter treatment depends on the actual pool system and product formulation. Water care, equipment freeze protection and ongoing checks are separate tasks.
Depending on their formulation, winter pool treatment products help protect the water during the off-season and make spring cleaning easier.
The choice is made together with the way the pool will be closed and the existing treatment system. The product does not carry out the whole winterising process on its own.
Testing, surface cleaning, filtration maintenance, the cover and equipment protection are assessed separately. Even where a winter product has been used, the pool surroundings and the water level continue to be monitored as planned.
A copper-containing or copper-free formula must be compatible with the disinfection system in use and with the pool finish.
Because copper-containing products may carry a risk of staining depending on water balance and the finish, the label warnings are assessed separately. A general description of a product family does not count as the same instruction for every variant. The intended use and limitations on the current label must be read carefully.

Applying the quantity specified for one concentrated product to another product's packaging is not correct.
Even for a pool of the same volume, the instructions may change when the formulation and intended use change. The reference volume, application timing and repeat conditions on the label are read together.
No mixture is prepared in the same container with chlorine or any other chemical. The conditions required between the previous treatment and the application of the new product are taken from the relevant instructions. No general timing or quantity formula is given for all pools.
A winter water treatment product does not replace the mechanical measures that protect water in the pump or pipework from freezing.
Draining, shutting down and protecting the equipment are planned by the technical team in line with the model's manual.
The decision to change the water level is not independent of the product dose either: the pool structure, groundwater, pipework and cover conditions must be assessed together. A recommendation to lower every pool to the same line should not be used.
The final test results, the product and quantity used, the application date, the condition of the equipment and the cover checks make the reopening assessment easier.
If there has been a significant change in water because of rainfall or another reason, this is also added to the record.
