Pool Water Test Kit Selection: Strips, DPD and Photometers
Compare strips, reagent tests and photometers by the values they measure. Check range, storage and calibration before making treatment decisions.

Not every kit measures the same values. Some cover chlorine and pH; others include alkalinity, hardness or cyanuric acid. Choose the method for the maintenance decision rather than the number of display functions.
Check whether chlorine means free or total chlorine. These are different measurements. Read the test range and the required reagents.
Strips use timed colour comparison. Reagent comparison kits use a specified chemical method. Photometers read compatible tests instrumentally. Probe-based devices require appropriate maintenance and calibration.
DPD names a reagent method; not every drop test is DPD. ORP is not a direct free-chlorine ppm reading. A controller displaying ORP does not automatically remove the need for other tests. The U.S. CDC recommends a DPD test kit for measuring chlorine and pH in home pools and describes test strips as an acceptable but less accurate option. At very high chlorine levels the DPD colour can bleach out and give a false low reading.
Follow the sampling, container-cleaning and reading-time instructions. Check reagent expiry and storage. For a photometer, inspect the sample vessel; for a probe, follow calibration and maintenance requirements.
A doubtful or out-of-range result should prompt a method check before adding chemical. Record the date, method, result and subsequent action. Residential and public pools must follow the monitoring requirements appropriate to their use.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Start with the parameter you need | Not every kit measures the same values. |
| Understand the different methods | Strips use timed colour comparison. |
| Make the result repeatable | Follow the sampling, container-cleaning and reading-time instructions. |
