Six numbers for a hammam in a British home
Climate averages and typical room conditions we use when planning a hammam or steam room in the UK.
Manchester air
Damp
Why does damp matter so much for a UK steam room?
Manchester is one of the wetter British cities. Older houses already hold moisture, so the steam must leave through its own extract.

London winters
Frost
Does a UK hammam need extra insulation?
London sees frosty nights most winters. Walls behind a steam room are insulated so the warm side never meets the cold.
Request a quotation
Hammam hot room
35-45°C
What temperature is a home hammam?
Usually 35 to 45 °C with high humidity: gentle, moist warmth that rises from a heated marble platform.
Request a quotation
Steam room
100%
How much moisture does a steam room make?
It runs close to saturation. Tanking, a vapour barrier and a sealed door keep that moisture out of the house.

Sauna
80-100°C
Should I choose a sauna or a steam room?
A sauna is dry heat at 80 to 100 °C; a steam room is moist and cooler. Many UK homes fit both on one plant.

Steam room installation and a Turkish bath at home: what matters in a British house
Most UK projects are indoors, in older buildings, on hard water. These six topics decide the cost, the layout and the upkeep.
Written by Ali SAVAŞ
What drives the cost
The price of a home hammam follows the room, not a catalogue.
- Room size and ceiling height set the marble quantity and the generator.
- The marble grade and thickness, a wet heating circuit or an electric mat, and the state of an older building all move the figure.
- Narrow access and import VAT are listed as separate lines.
- We quote from your plan and photos, never from a price per square metre.

Space and room planning
A compact steam cabin fits where a shower room would go, while a hammam with a central platform needs a little more floor and height.
- Basements, spare bedrooms, garages and spa corridors all work if three things are in place.
- The extract needs a route to outside.
- The drain needs enough fall, and the floor must take the weight of marble.
- In a leasehold flat the freeholder may need to consent to ducts and pipework.

Hard water and damp air
London water is among the hardest in the country, and limescale is what kills steam generators early.
- We fit a generator with automatic flushing or a softener on the feed, and specify grout that copes with regular descaling.
- The other British problem is damp: Manchester is one of the wetter cities in the country, and an older house already struggles with condensation.
- A steam room therefore gets its own vapour barrier, insulation and extract fan, so moisture leaves the building instead of travelling into the walls.

Regulations, customs and VAT
A steam room inside a house falls under building regulations for electrics, ventilation and drainage.
- Listed buildings and flats with a freeholder may need extra consent for ducts and pipework.
- Since the UK left the EU, goods from Turkey travel with a customs declaration and import VAT, shown separately in the quotation.
- UK product markings are checked for each shipment.

Delivery and our installers
The hammam leaves Turkey by lorry and ferry in a single load, each marble slab numbered to the fitting plan.
- Our installation team lays the heated platform, benches and basins, fits the generator and commissions the room.
- A registered UK electrician handles the mains connection and certification, arranged by us or coordinated with yours.
- Access through narrow hallways is checked before the stone is cut.

Aftercare
With hard water, the generator's descaling routine is the one job you cannot skip.
- We set the interval from your water report and show you how.
- Marble is cleaned with a pH-neutral product, never acid descalers, and a wear-parts list comes at handover.

Hammam UK: how to choose between the main options
For most British houses we recommend pale dense marble, a wet circuit off the existing boiler or heat pump, and a sloped ceiling. The table shows when the other option is better.
| Decision | Option 1 | Option 2 | Which, and when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marble | Dense white, low porosity | Coloured or veined | White on the platform and wet zone; coloured on dry walls outside the spray |
| Heating | Wet circuit from boiler or heat pump | Electric mat | Wet circuit in a house with a system; electric for a flat or a small room |
| Ceiling | Dome | Sloped ceiling | Slope for standard room heights; dome only where the room is tall |
| Steam source | Heated platform plus generator | Generator only | Platform makes the steam softer in a larger room; generator alone for a compact cabin |
| Basin | Carved from one block | Ready-made basin | One block for a hammam meant to last; ready-made if the budget is tight |

// 08 · Common mistakes
Mistakes we see when hammams go wrong in British homes
Most problems start when a steam room is treated as a shower enclosure. These are the five we meet most.

Tiling a shower enclosure and adding steam
A tiled cubicle with no tanking behind the tile gets a generator fitted. Steam pushes into plasterboard and the floor, grout fails, and the room next door smells damp. Do it properly: a membrane taken above splash height, a vapour barrier and falls set out before the first tile.
Extract into the loft or bathroom fan
The steam room extract is pushed into the loft void or joined to the bathroom fan. Warm moist air condenses on cold timbers and mould follows, sometimes with a ceiling stain below. The extract belongs on its own duct to outside with a non-return damper.
No descaling plan
The generator is fitted on hard water with no flush or softener. Limescale coats the element, the output drops and it burns out within months. The remedy is automatic flushing, softened feed water and a written descaling interval.
Cut marble to a drawing, not a survey
Slabs are ordered from a plan without checking the walls. Old houses are never square, so joints open and filler appears. Survey first, cut second, and check the access route.
Ordinary internal door
A standard door in a steam room swells and leaks steam onto the landing, and the paint peels within a season. Use a sealed glass door on a proper seal and threshold, designed together with the ventilation.
// 09 · Cost
What affects the cost of a hammam or steam room installation in the UK
Price follows room volume, marble and the state of the building, not only the floor area. We quote from your plan and photos, so no figures are printed here.
| Factor | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Room size and ceiling height | More air to heat and humidify means a bigger generator and more heating power. A high ceiling adds energy demand in a British winter. |
| Marble grade and thickness | Dense pale marble costs more than porous stone, and thick slabs add weight and freight. They stay clean longer and hold heat better. |
| Heating method | A wet circuit from an existing boiler is cheaper to run but needs pipe runs. Electric mats are quick to install and cost more to use on a regular basis. |
| Age and condition of the building | Old walls, uneven floors and limited drainage fall add labour to waterproofing and levelling. New-build walls are usually flatter and cheaper to finish. |
| Access and delivery | Narrow hallways and stairs slow the hand carry of heavy slabs. Lorry access to the street and a parking suspension can also change the plan. |
| Import VAT and customs | Goods from Turkey arrive with a customs declaration and import VAT. We show both as separate lines so you can see the full cost. |
What you receive at handover

- Product documents and operating manuals for the equipment.

Request a quotationBoth use moist heat. A steam room is usually a sealed cabin with benches. A Turkish hammam adds a heated marble platform in the centre, marble basins with running water and a washing ritual, so it takes a little more space and more stonework.

Goods from Turkey are declared at the border and import VAT applies. We list these costs separately in the quotation so there are no surprises on delivery.
Çilek Havuz Technical Team
The cost of a home hammam depends on the size of the room, the marble, the heating and how easy the access is. We give a figure only after seeing plans and photos, and the quotation lists every line.
Çilek Havuz Technical Team
Often yes. What matters is a route for the extract to outside, a drain with enough fall and a floor that takes the weight of marble. A leasehold flat may also need the freeholder's consent.
Çilek Havuz Technical Team
Less than most people expect. A steam cabin fits in the footprint of a shower room, and a hammam with a heated central platform needs roughly the floor of a small bedroom. We confirm it from your plan and ceiling height.
Çilek Havuz Technical Team
Not yet. Our finished hammams are in Turkey and are shown on this page, and the same workshop and crew would cut and install yours in the UK.
