Six figures that shape a pool or home spa in the UK

Typical operating ranges and climate averages we check first on a British brief. None of them is a price.

Indoor pool water

28-30°C

What temperature is an indoor pool kept at?

Most home pools run at 28 to 30 °C. A heat pump holds it there, and a cover stops the heat escaping overnight.

Indoor pool, sauna and home spa installation in British houses

In the UK the pool and the spa usually live indoors, in a basement, an extension or a converted garage. These six topics decide what fits and what it costs to run.

Written by Ali SAVAŞ

Indoor pools: heat pump and dehumidification

An indoor pool in a British house is mostly an air problem, not a water problem.

  • Warm water evaporates all day, and without dehumidification the room fogs, windows stream and the structure takes the damp.
  • The pool hall needs a dehumidifier sized to the water surface and the room, a vapour barrier in walls and roof, and a cover when the pool is not used.
  • A heat pump keeps the water at swimming temperature with a lower running cost than direct electric heating.

Pool, sauna and spa in the UK: which option to choose

For most British homes we recommend an indoor pool with a heat pump, dehumidifier and cover, plus a sauna or steam room on the same plant. The table shows when the other option is better.

Where we work in the UK

London, the capital, leads on basement pools and home spas; Manchester and Birmingham add family homes, hotels and health clubs.

  1. LondonCapital

The capital: basement pools, townhouse spas and hotel wellness floors. Very hard water and tight access.

    July 23 °C · January 2 °C · frost in winter

  2. Manchester

Family homes, hotels and health clubs with strong demand for saunas and steam rooms. Wet climate, so condensation control comes first.

    July 20 °C · January 2 °C · frost in winter

    Ask about this city
  3. Birmingham

Detached houses where an extension or a garage becomes a pool room, a sauna or a steam room.

    July 21 °C · January 1 °C · inland, more frost than London

// 08 · Common mistakes

Mistakes we see on UK pools and spas

Most come from treating a pool room or a steam room like an ordinary bathroom. These five cost the most to put right.

Indoor pool between green walls, Laleli, Istanbul (Turkey)
  1. Indoor pool without dehumidification

The pool is heated but the air is left to itself. Windows stream, timber swells and mould appears within a winter. Size the dehumidifier with the pool.

  2. Steam extract into the loft

Moist air is ducted into the roof space or a bathroom fan. The loft takes the water and the insulation sags. Take the duct to outside.

  3. No scale plan in a hard-water area

The steam generator runs on untreated London water and scales within months. A softener costs less than a new element.

  4. Access checked after ordering

Marble slabs and plant are ordered before the stairs are measured, and they do not fit. Size crates to the survey drawing.

  5. Import costs left out

The budget covers supply and fitting but not import VAT and customs clearance. Ask for delivery and clearance as separate lines.

// 09 · Cost

What affects the cost of a pool or home spa in the UK

Cost follows the rooms, the access and the air handling, not only the size. We price from your drawings, so no figures are shown here.

FactorWhat it changes
Pool room and air handlingDehumidifier, vapour barrier and ventilation are a large share of an indoor pool.
Basement or extensionTanking, structure and access in a basement add to the builder's scope.
Number of hot roomsA sauna and a steam room on one plant cost less than two separate systems.
Marble and finishesHammam platform size, basin carving and mosaic choice change stonework time.
Import VAT and clearanceImport VAT and the customs agent's fee sit on top of supply and fitting.
Builder and electrician scopeThe more local work your builder holds, the fewer lines we carry.

What you receive at handover

  1. Installation drawings with the plant, pipework and extract routes.
  2. Pressure, tightness and commissioning records.
  3. Training for the owner, club or hotel staff.
  4. Maintenance calendar for the pool, sauna, steam room and hammam.
  5. Spare parts list and descaling plan for hard water.
  6. Product documents and operating manuals in English.

Not yet. We work in the UK as a manufacturer and installer delivering from Turkey. Our finished projects are in Turkey and are listed with their details on the projects page.

Çilek Havuz Technical Team

Yes. A warm pool evaporates all day, and without dehumidification and a vapour barrier the room fogs and the structure takes the damp. A pool cover cuts the load when the pool is idle.

Çilek Havuz Technical Team

Yes, once the basement is tanked and the structure is designed by your engineer. We draw the pool shell, plant room and extract routes to fit the dig and the access.

Çilek Havuz Technical Team

Your builder does the civil works, and a UK registered electrician connects the mains. Our crew installs and commissions the pool, sauna, steam and hammam equipment.

Çilek Havuz Technical Team

Yes, import VAT is charged when the goods enter the UK. We supply the invoice, packing list and product documents for your customs agent, and show delivery as its own line.

Çilek Havuz Technical Team

The cost of a home spa in the UK depends on the rooms, the finishes, the access and the builder's scope. We price only from drawings, and every line is itemised.

Çilek Havuz Technical Team

A sauna is the easiest first room: dry, compact and quick to heat. A steam room needs tanking and an extract but suits people who prefer moist warmth; many homes fit both on one plant.
