AstralPool ETNA Heat Exchanger, Titanium Plate.

AstralPool ETNA Heat Exchanger is a titanium plate heat exchanger that heats pool water with hot water from an existing heat source such as a boiler or combi boiler. Çilek Havuz supplies ETNA through quotes and as part of its projects. The two waters do not mix. It is offered in 16 sizes from ETNA-15 to ETNA-580. Each size comes in three levels, Bare, Equipped and Complete; the Complete level includes the primary circulation pump.

Users and applications

Offered for buildings with a boiler or combi boiler where the pool is to be heated from this source. The water of the heat source and the pool water do not mix; heat passes across corrugated titanium plates. The level is chosen according to the existing installation: Bare for a boiler room that already has controls and a pump, Equipped or Complete for a system built from scratch.

// 03 · Installation and compatibility

Installation and compatible equipment

ETNA is installed between two circuits: the hot water of the heat source is connected to the primary circuit, and the pool line after the filter to the secondary circuit. On the Bare model, the valve, thermostat and pump are installed separately. The Equipped model carries full controls and filtration pump control. The Complete model adds the primary circulation pump and reduces additional work on the boiler side.

  1. The boiler or combi boiler output and the primary water temperature are determined.
  2. The ETNA size and level are selected according to the pool size.
  3. The primary circuit is connected to the boiler line, the secondary circuit to the pool line after the filter.
  4. On the Bare model, the thermostat, valve and primary pump are connected separately.
  5. The circuits are filled and bled of air, and the thermostat is set.

// 04 · Maintenance

Maintenance checkpoints

The aim of maintenance on a plate heat exchanger is to keep the plates clean. The pH and hardness of the pool water are kept in balance and the filter is backwashed regularly, so scale and dirt do not build up on the plates. During long shutdowns and when preparing for winter, the secondary circuit is drained. When the plate pack is opened, the EPDM gaskets are checked and replaced if necessary.

A pool can be heated with a combi boiler; the part in between is a heat exchanger such as AstralPool ETNA Heat Exchanger. The hot water of the combi boiler circulates in the primary circuit and the pool water in the secondary circuit, and the two waters do not mix. The combi boiler output is assessed to cover both home heating and the pool; for a large pool, a boiler is preferred.

The Bare ETNA is the heat exchanger body only and has ISO G2 AISI-316 stainless steel threaded connections. The Equipped model comes with copper connections on the primary side and PVC on the pool side; it includes full controls and filtration pump control. The Complete model also carries the primary circuit circulation pump and does not need a separate pump on the boiler side.

A pool heat exchanger is connected between two circuits. The primary circuit is the hot water line coming from the boiler or combi boiler; the secondary circuit is the line returning to the pool after the filter. The chlorine dosing or salt chlorinator unit stays after the heat exchanger. On the Equipped and Complete ETNA models, the primary connection is copper and the secondary connection is PVC.

The difference lies in the heat exchanger design and the number of sizes; both products heat pool water with an existing heat source. Zodiac Heat Line is a titanium tube heat exchanger and comes in three outputs: 20, 40 and 70 kW. AstralPool ETNA has a titanium plate design; it is offered in 16 sizes from ETNA-15 to ETNA-580 and in three levels: Bare, Equipped and Complete.

The ETNA size is selected according to the pool volume, the desired heat-up time and the primary water temperature coming from the boiler. The hotter the primary water, the more heat the same size transfers. The boiler output is also taken into account, because the heat exchanger cannot transfer more heat than the boiler supplies. The calculation is made with the pool dimensions and boiler details.

A heat exchanger with titanium plates is used on a salt water pool. The corrugated plates of ETNA that are in contact with the pool water are made of titanium and the gaskets of EPDM. Titanium resists corrosion in the chloride water of pools with salt chlorination systems. The body is epoxy-painted carbon steel and does not come into contact with the pool water. Water chemistry is still kept in balance, and pH and hardness are measured regularly.

ETNA is sold in 16 sizes: 15, 35, 50, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 460, 500 and 580. Each size comes in three levels: Bare, Equipped and Complete. The smallest size is ETNA-15 and the largest ETNA-580. The size is selected according to the pool volume and the primary water temperature coming from the boiler.
