Pool UV Disinfection Systems, definition and selection criteria
A pool UV system is a unit fitted in the circulation line that disinfects the water returning from the filter with UV-C radiation as it passes through a reactor. UV-C acts on the water only while it passes through the reactor and leaves no residual disinfectant in the pool, so free chlorine continues to be provided by a salt chlorinator or a dosing pump. This page covers low pressure (LP) and medium pressure (MP) UV-C units and the PVC body Lyriox UV-C models. Heliox UV LP, Heliox UV LP S.S. and Heliox UV LP PE work at a wavelength of 254 nm. The medium pressure Heliox UV MP has an AISI 316 stainless steel reactor, and its lamp power is adjustable between 70 and 100%. Selection starts with three pieces of information: the flow rate of the line, the target UV dose and the body material.

Heliox UV LP and Lyriox UV-C are sized for a 30 mJ/cm² dose, and Heliox UV MP for a 60 mJ/cm² dose. For Heliox UV LP S.S. and Heliox UV LP PE, the flow rate is given separately for both the 35 and the 60 mJ/cm² dose.

On Heliox UV LP the UV-C power starts at 13 W and rises to 2 x 25 W on the two-lamp model. Heliox UV LP S.S. delivers 90 to 180 W and Heliox UV LP PE 30 to 714 W of UV-C power. As the power increases, the flow the model handles also rises.

The model is chosen by the flow rate of the pool pump, and the pump flow rate must not exceed the value of the model. Lyriox UV-C handles 2 to 15 m³/h and Heliox UV LP 10 to 30 m³/h. For higher flow lines, at a 35 mJ/cm² dose Heliox UV LP S.S. covers 45 to 95 m³/h and Heliox UV LP PE 20 to 327 m³/h.

Heliox UV LP, Heliox UV LP S.S. and Heliox UV LP PE are low pressure and work at a wavelength of 254 nm. The medium pressure Heliox UV MP is for public pools; it has an AISI 316 stainless steel reactor, a colour touchscreen and a UV-C intensity sensor measuring in mW/cm². On the MP the lamp power is adjustable between 70 and 100%, and the reactor is sized for a 60 mJ/cm² dose.

The dose shows the UV-C energy the water receives in the reactor, and a higher dose requires a lower flow rate. The Heliox UV LP S.S. I45 model handles 45 m³/h at a 35 mJ/cm² dose and 22 m³/h at a 60 mJ/cm² dose. Which dose is used is set by the disinfection target of the pool.

The PVC body of Lyriox UV-C is suitable for use with saltwater systems, and it is fitted in the line with a 50 mm pipe connection. For Heliox UV LP PE, seawater flow rates are given separately: at a 35 mJ/cm² dose they are 15 m³/h for P20 EX and 198 m³/h for P300. In a seawater pool the model is chosen by the value in this column.

On the Auto Wiper version of Heliox UV MP, the quartz sleeve is cleaned by an automatic wiper during operation. On the standard version the sleeve is removed and cleaned by hand. The LP+ versions of Heliox UV LP add a built-in pH and ORP controller with sensors; dosing pumps are not included in the package. You can contact us for model selection and a quote.
