Salt Chlorinator Models, definition and selection criteria
A salt chlorinator is a unit that produces chlorine by passing the salt added to the pool water through an electrolysis cell in the filtration return line; a saltwater pool is a pool disinfected with this unit. This page covers residential salt electrolysis units, commercial systems for public pools and hybrid systems that combine a UV lamp with electrolysis. Selection starts with three pieces of information: pool volume, hourly chlorine output and the salt concentration at which the water will be kept. Residential models produce 7 to 42 g/h of chlorine and are sized for pools of 25 to 200 m³. Standard units need at least 3 to 5 g/L of salt; LS and low salt series work at 1 to 1.6 g/L.

Chlorine output on residential units is between 7 and 42 g/h. Smart Next, Energy Connect, Clear Connect, E-Next and eXPERT come in models of 7 to 40 g/h, Elite Connect 12 to 42 g/h and Ei² 12 to 25 g/h.

Matching the model to the pool
Residential models are sized for pools of 25 to 200 m³. E-Next 7 is for a 25 m³ pool; Smart Next 40 and eXPERT 40 suit a 180 m³ pool, and Elite Connect 42 a 200 m³ pool. If the pool is close to the capacity limit, the next model up is chosen.

Elite Connect LS and Neolysis Connect LS work with at least 1 g/L of salt, eXO iQ LS with at least 1.6 g/L. Energy Connect needs 3 g/L, Smart Next 4 g/L, and Clear Connect and E-Next 5 g/L.

+90 216 475 39 37The number in the model name usually gives the hourly chlorine output in g/h, and each model is sized for a pool volume. For example, Elite Connect 12 is for a 50 m³ pool, Smart Next 21 for 90 m³ and eXO iQ 35 for 160 m³. If the pool is close to the capacity limit, used heavily or in a hot region, the next model up is chosen.

The recommended salt level for eXPERT, eXO iQ and Ei² is 4 g/L, which means 4 kg of salt per cubic metre of pool water. Low salt models have a lower target: 2 g/L is recommended for eXO iQ LS and 2 to 2.5 g/L for Nature Salt. Salt is added once; the amount diluted by backwashing, overflow and rain is measured and topped up.

Cell life is used up by operating hours and is between 7,500 and 18,000 hours depending on the model. The settings that affect it are the salt level and the polarity reversal interval; this interval is set between 2 and 8 hours depending on the model. With 18,000 hours, the Elite Connect CellGuard® cell is the longest lasting residential cell on this page.

Residential units produce 7 to 42 g/h of chlorine and are supplied with 220-240 V. Commercial systems are for public pools: Easy Salt produces 50 to 180 g/h, Easy Salt Next VC 75 to 190 g/h and Pro-Chlore Salt 50 to 600 g/h. The large Pro-Chlore Salt models need 380 V, and the flow through the cell must be at least 9 to 90 m³/h depending on the model.

In a hybrid system the water passes through a UV reactor and an electrolysis cell in the same line. UV breaks down chloramines in the water and the cell produces free chlorine. Neolysis Connect, with 12 to 32 g/h and 48 to 56 W of UV power, suits residential pools, and Neolysis S, with 50 to 300 g/h and 75 W to 4 x 90 W of UV power, suits facility pools. Freepool² combines 180 g/h of chlorine output, 3 x 90 W UV and pH control with CO2. UV-only units are on the Pool UV Systems page.

The Smart Next pH and pH/Rx, E-Next pH, and eXPERT pH and pH/ORP versions have measurement built into the unit. Ei²iQ pH Evo also adjusts the pH value with a built-in pump. The adjustable Energy Connect and Clear Connect series are upgraded with pH and ORP kits; for Clear Connect the measuring range is 0.0-9.9 pH and 0-999 mV.
